During the beginning of 1977, a number of informal discussions took place between a small group of enthusiasts regarding the possibility and desirability of setting up a club to promote the Irish Setter within the principality of Wales. It was decided to call a meeting of interested parties to discuss the possible formation of such a club. This first meeting took place at the Metropole Hotel in Llandrindod Wells on 12th May, 1977 and was attended by fourteen people including Colin Murphy, Moira Clark, Ivor and Margaret Gittins, Barry Shapter, Gordon and Janice Rual and Mr. Urghart.
A further meeting took place on 13th August, 1977. At this meeting a chairman (Colin Murphy), president (Owen Jenkins), secretary (Janice Rual) and treasurer (Mr. Urghart) were appointed. Subsequently, Ivor Gittins was appointed vice-chairman. It was decided to contact Irish Setter exhibitors residing in and close to the borders of the principality and to invite them to attend a meeting on 15th January, 1978.
A further open meeting was convened on 12th March, 1978. Representations were made to the Kennel Club and the formation of the Irish Setter club of Wales was approved on 16th October, 1978.
